Warm and fun for a cold day. The rum flavor comes through so make sure you use a flavorful dark rum.

Classic all the way.
@jakjericho you could substitute sugar for the simple syrup, since its a hot drink the sugar will be dissolved. I'd avoid the extra spices though because they might mask the subtleties of the rum (if you use a good rum that is).
I was just thinking about this drink the other day, I've never made it but am glad to see it here. It's an oldy and a goody.
I would add some whole cloves and a sprinkle of allspice to this. I'd also use some "Sugar in the Raw" rather than prepared simple syrup, to keep with the rum theme. Still, a cocktail like this is a lot of work to make, and I applaud your effort, your recipe, and your photograph. Very nice and very seasonal.
This is Apres-Skiing at it's best, whether you have hit the slopes or not!
